How to Learn a New Language - 3 Errors

Learning a new language is easy and possible for anyone who wants to speak a second (2nd) language. However there are some misguided ideas or Errors about learning a new language that I will like us to look at and see how untrue those myths are.
I will explain three of those commonly used “errors” about language learning that will be discussed below.

Error 1) It is not possible to learn a new language fast
It is not TRUE - It is possible that you have heard this exact line from one of your teachers when you took a language in school. Or you may have heard it from one of your friends who is living in a foreign country and making little headway in the native tongue. Fortunately, it's a myth. Today’s technology has made it possible for anyone who want to learn a new language whether old or young to learn it fast enough.

Error 2) It is much easier to learn a new language as a child.
It is a LIE... It is a familiar story and it goes something like this: you only have a limited window during your childhood to learn languages. During this time your child brain is much more capable of absorbing linguistic information. If you don't learn a second language then, your circuitry shuts off and this window slams shut on all of your aspirations to be bilingual. Or at least you are condemned to a much more difficult path should you even attempt to try as an adult.

The reason is that: I am no longer a child; therefore I will not be able to learn another language easily or at all. But try this logic on for size instead: this idea is a myth, therefore it's false! Again, technology has made it possible for even an old man or woman to learn a new language like a child at their own pace.

Error 3)
The best way to learn a new language is to go to that foreign country and immerse, immerse, immerse…
It is a LIE… Immersion is a very fashionable word when it comes to concocting language learning catch-phrases. And for good reason, surrounding oneself with other native speakers and being forced to communicate in the target language most if not all of the time is a powerful way to learn a second language.

But here is the thing: you do not need to go to Germany to immerse yourself in German, Italy to immerse yourself in Italian, Korea to immerse yourself in Korean, and so on. This belief just puts another obstacle in your path, and gives you an all-too-tidy excuse not to take your language learning seriously in the meantime. It is true, the onus lies on the individual to plan and take his new language learning seriously.

To your love for languages.

How to Study a New Language by Yourself

Studying a new language that is not your native or official language may seem a bit intimidating at first. With a bit of brain power, determination and technology, it can be fun. Best of all, it can be totally free! We will look at five (5) Steps in teaching yourself a new language.

Step 1 - Be proficient at your own language first
It is very important that you know and understand the "parts of speech". If you can identify what part of speech a word is, you will be able to understand and practice the syntax (word order, which is different from English in most cases) of another language.

Step 2 - Decide on a Language
Decide what language you really want to learn to speak, example is it French or Chinese or German?

Step 3 - Think about how you will use the language
Do you want to speak fluently? Do you just need some general phrases or do you need a strong reading knowledge of a particular language for graduate school?

Step 4 - Where to get the right language programme
If you are someone who needs the books and tapes on hand, go online first and search area bookstores. Check to see if they have the language you want to learn. Decide if you need just a book or whether a book with tapes would be more appropriate. Most often, it helps to hear the language being spoken by a native. A good audio program (no book needed) is needed. You will repeat a lot and progress slowly, but you will remember everything.

Step 5 - Time Table for Language Learning
Allocate sometime to learn the language at least 15 to 30 minutes a day. This will help you to progress in the new language steadily.

I hope with these five (5) steps, studying a new language by yourself will become easier and faster for you.

Why Study A Second Language - Four (4) Reasons

Language is the way we communicate and relate to each other in a given community. There are many languages in the world; some of these languages are very essential to learn and study. Some of these important languages are English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, German, Swahili, Russian, Italian and Sign Languages.

The reasons why one should study a second language cannot be overemphasized as I elaborate on four (4) of the reasons. These languages help us learn about a new culture, people and history; they help us to interact easily with variety of people who speak that particular language; it gives us international exposure and opportunities; and it also helps us to save money and travel freely around the world.

Reason No. 1 – Interaction with a Variety of People
Learning a new language aid us in getting to know a lot of people and also easily acquaint ourselves with them without any barriers;

Reason No. 2 – Learn a New Culture and History
Also, a new language opens the door to learn about a new culture; a new country; and natural tourist attraction sites that teaches and tells you (learner) a lot about its history;

Reason No. 3 – International Exposure and Opportunity
In addition, learning a new language gives you the opportunity to work with international organisations like the United Nations System; because about eight of the languages are recognised and used by the United Nations System and other well-known international organisations;

Reason No. 4 – Save Money and Freely Travel Around
Lastly, a new language gives you the opportunity to travel around the world freely without hassle or pain and you also save money as you can speak that particular language, nobody can cheat you, or you don’t have to pay money for translation.

These are some of the reasons why we need to learn a new language. It will boost your confidence, try out a new language, choose a language of your choice and start learning a new language today. You will not regret you did.
